Diego Rivera Gallery Stills

December 2004

This exhibition featured a performance by DanCoyote and the Alonso Quixano Quartet, including the Burka Boys, Dialo as the Raven and Juan as the Coyote.

DanCoyote (DC Spensley) directed the Alonso Quixano Quartet of Macintosh laptops loaded with custom sampler software (Max/MSP patches) created for the event. The laptop samplers played a variety of musical and noise samples used in a choreographed collage.

With a system of hand motions, DC cues players in the quartet as well as the “Burka Boys” who are male dancers in burrka like costumes performing a variation on the Hawaiian hakka dance while shouting numbers in Korean.

At the same time another performer drove a remote control car prepared with a magnetic tape head and a transmitter. As the remote control car traveled over 6, 4 ft x 8ft panels covered with fond 2 1/4 inch 32 track audio tape, the signal created is transmitted to the mixing board as an instrument in the collage.
